There are several big concerts in the area and quite a few smaller shows to mark on your live music entertainment calendar this week. Many of the national touring acts are pairing up with locally-based musicians and bands. To broaden your musical circle and become familiar with local acts too, here’s where to be when.

Tonight, Wednesday the 31st, the rock / pop / post-punk band Drop Dead, Gorgeous is in concert a The Icon, N. Main Street in Pocatello, with the locally-based rock group Danny the Skeleton Horse and many more. Tickets are $13; show starts at 7:00 p.m.

Drop Dead, Gorgeous (comma required to get the play-on-words) is a post-hardcore band from Denver, Colorado. They have released three studio albums and two EPs since January 2006 and have toured the country extensively, a favorite on the main stage of Van’s Warped Tour. In Idaho Falls tonight, Sherwood is in concert with Black Gold and Reece, Seabird, Neon Trees, the locally-based pop group Madison Lights and the Boise-based rock band, Bank. The concert is at the Idaho Falls Civic Center; tickets are $10 and doors open at 6:00 p.m.

Also in Idaho Falls, the metal band Hemlock is playing with the locally-based alt. rock band 2am Logic tonight at the 840 Club. Doors open at 8:00 p.m.

On Thursday, April Fools Day, the Pocatello-based acoustic rock band, The Kratz Bros. Band, is playing at Senang Wine Bar. No Foolin’! Music starts at 7:00 p.m.

At the Flipside Lounge on Main Street in Pocatello, the Thomas Paul Trio is scheduled to play indie folk music, starting at 8:00 p.m. Cost is $3 and the show is open to those 21+.

Thomas Paul is an eclectic singer-songwriter, composer, bandleader and part-time music teacher from Boise, Idaho. His 2009 release, "House On Fire," available for sale at the show, combines elements of swing, funk, country, indie-rock, bluegrass, jazz, blues, folk and Latin music.

Listen for some Thomas Paul Trio crowd favorites: “Uncle Bill,” a fast bluegrass-style number that people love; “House On Fire,” an indie-style trippy rocker that people sing along with, and “Summer's Indiscretion” get a lot of positive crowd response. Thomas Paul has played locally at the brewery and at the Vinyl Perk.

Front man and vocalist Thomas Paul will be joined by bassist Bob Nagel and Louis McFarland on drums and percussion at the Flipside. The trio has played together on and off for several years. Paul has been a member of the Boise-based but locally popular folk group, Hillfolk Noir.

Speaking of trios, Portneuf Valley Brewing has a trio of shows this weekend. On Thursday the 1st, a special show in the loft with Claire Roche & Celtic Dreamtime, free and open to all ages. The Celtic music and folklore starts at 7:30 p.m. For more on what to expect, visit www.celticdreamtime.com.

On Friday at the pub, Elvis Has Left the Building will be on stage starting at 8:30 p.m., playing Americana and original folk music. And on Saturday the 3rd, return to Portneuf Valley Brewing for Soul Full of Blues with vocalist Ramona Awes, no cover and open to all ages.

For the 21+ crowd this weekend, the Idaho Falls-based rock cover band, Stiff Richard, is scheduled at Taps Bar on Garrett Way both Friday and Saturday nights starting at 9:00 p.m.

And the Green T Bar & Grill is goin’ back to their roots, goin’ country with the Salt Lake-based country band, Mountain Pacific, playing this weekend and again the weekend after the Rodeo. During the rodeo next week, expect to see concerts with Hillbilly, Rocky Watson and Country Gold. It’s time to put on your hat ‘n boots ‘n head back to the Green T to check it out.

And last but not least on my list of live music concerts to catch this week, the Sludge Metal Fest at the Shilo Inn in Idaho Falls, Saturday the 3rd, with doors opening at 7:00 p.m. Denots and Ixxion headline the show with many more bands; tickets are $8 in advance, available at CD World in Idaho Falls or from the bands; $12 at the door.

Interview with the Thomas Paul

Thomas Paul is an eclectic singer-songwriter, composer and bandleader from Boise, Idaho. I caught up with Thomas recently to find out more about his music and the pair of musicians who will join him this week at the Flipside Lounge.

Recently named one of Boise's top singers and musicians, the multi-instrumentalist and part-time music teacher has a wide variety of influences and genres that infiltrate his material. His most recent release, "House On Fire," was released in March of 2009 and features some of Boise's finest musicians. The album masterfully combines elements of swing, funk, country, indie-rock, bluegrass, jazz, blues, psychedelia, bedroom folk and Latin music into a seamless whole.


SLG: Maybe list your three best crowd-pleasing songs?

TP: "Uncle Bill" is a fast bluegrass-style number that people love. "Summer's Indiscretion" gets a lot of response. "House On Fire" is an indie-style trippy rocker that i hear people singing along with at times.

SLG: Can you explain in what way do you most appeal to your fans?

TP: Good quality independent art music without rules or gimmick. Not a one-trick pony.

SLG: Band member first and last names / instruments. Who's playing with you this week?

TP: Thomas on vocals, guitar, piano, Moog, mandolin and more, in addition to Bob Nagel(upright bass), Louis McFarland (drums, percussion).

SLG: How long has this line-up been together?

TP: Bob and I have played 2.5 yrs now. Louis and I have played on and off for over 5 years but he rejoined the band full time in October.

SLG: Do you do solo work too?

TP: I do a lot of solo gigs.

SLG: What history do you have with other bands?


TP: Member of Boise bands current and past: Bill Coffey, Hillfolk Noir, Clock, New Transit, Gizzard Stone

SLG: Tell us where you're from and currently based in what town?

TP: Originally from Idaho Falls. Moved to Boise in 1996 and 2001. Back to Idaho Falls for 1999-2000 (family concerns)

TP: Played all over Boise and NW. Played Portneuf Brewery and Vinyl Perk recently. First show at Flipside, but I've hung out there several times, as I pass thru Pocatello quite a bit.

SLG: Describe this particular show - what can people expect if they come to this show?

The Icon is an all-ages music venue, located on N. Main Street in downtown Pocatello. It is owned and operated by a company out of Northern Utah, and there are several shows of interest there this week. Cost is $10 in advance; tickets available online at smithstix.com.

On Wednesday the 24th, Bless the Fall headlines with Greeley Estates, Fire in the Skies and more. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Bless the Fall is a post-hardcore band, of the Warped Tour genre, from Phoenix, Arizona. Thursday the 25th brings From First to Last to the Icon with Eyes Set To Kill, Confide, and more. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. From First to Last, another post-hardcore band, is based from Los Angeles, CA, originally from Georgia. On Saturday the 27th, the Icon welcomes Maylene and the Sons of Disaster, with After Midnight Project and more. Portneuf Valley Brewing has a week-full of live music too. Music entertainment starts at 8:30 p.m., open to all ages, and there is no cover charge. On Wednesday the 24th, a special concert by a locally familiar acoustic rock band, The Lucas Cates Band. Expect groovy acoustic rock, blues and pop a la John Mayer, Maroon 5 or Matchbox Twenty. You can also expect to hear some alt. country, funk and a little reggae mixed in, keeping the sets interesting and fresh with each song.

The band is led by Lucas Cates on acoustic guitar and vocals, with Kenny Leiser on electric guitar and violin, bassist mark Noxon, and an incredibly impressive drummer Jesse Warmka round out the touring band. For more, visit www.lucascates.com.

On Friday the 26th, Swingshift plays jazz, rock and pop in the pub, and on Saturday the 27th, Aaron Ball’s band, Somewhere In the Middle takes the brewery’s stage, playing acoustic alt. rock and pop. On almost every Friday night, Duffy’s Tavern on N. Main has a regionally-based rock cover band entertain the crowd with music and dancing. A favorite is back at it this Friday night, Kaught Lookin’ plays Duffy’s on the 26th, starting at 9:00 p.m.

Kaught Lookin’ is one of Southeast Idaho’s favorite party bands, playing classic rock favorites along with some of the best new rock of today. Expect to hear Lynrd Skynrd, Marshall Tucker Band, Alice in Chains, the Black Crows, Buckcherry … and you’ll know every word to every song.

Formed in 2006 from the then-defunct Exit 69, Kaught Lookin’ includes Rick Veilleux on lead guitar, Mark "Claw" Clawson bass guitar; Tony Roberts on percussion and vocalist Ed Horn. The current line-up has been together since November 2007.

When Veilleux, Clawson and Roberts started out together 20 years ago, it started with a dream to play just originals, but they had to learn enough covers to be able to play the venues in Southeast Idaho. Eventually they had played their own songs enough that fans were singing along, dancing and even requesting them.

Kaught Lookin is excited to announce that they are playing the POW-MIA Rally July 30, 2010, Friday, from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. at the Bannock County Fairgrounds. SLG: Tell us who's in the band and what instruments do they play? How long has this line-up been together?

KL: Kaught Lookin includes Rick Veilleux on lead guitar; Mark "Claw" Clawson bass guitar; Tony Roberts on percussion and Ed Horn on vocals. Current line-up has been together since November 2007.

Kaught Lookin formed back in 2006 when Rick and Tony, who played together in Exit 69 decided it was time to find a new singer, make some $$ and rock again. They recruited Jody Andersen, on bass, an old friend who had filled in for Claw, back in Exit 69 days. Then found a great new sound with Ed Horn, straight from Virginia. Jody left Kaught Lookin in 2007, just as Claw was returning from Seattle. Claw re-joined his Exit 69 buds and the rest is history, as they say.

SLG: Tell us where you're from and currently based in what town?

KL: Rick is originally from Maine by way of Canada and currently resides in Pocatello, Idaho. "Claw" has lived all over, but will claim Pocatello, ID, Pittsburgh, KS, and Seattle, WA as home, although he currently resides in Blackfoot, Idaho. Tony Roberts is from and currently resides in Pocatello, Idaho. Ed Horn is originally from King George, Virginia. Ed was in the Air Force and was stationed at Nellis AFB outside of Las Vegas, Nevada, and also lived in Tulsa, OK. Ed currently resides in Pocatello, Idaho.

SLG: Past shows or venues you'd like to brag about? Past or future shows in the Pocatello area?

KL: Kaught Lookin has played a few exciting shows around the area, including the 2007 First Annual Bigfoot Rendezvous Festival and the 2009 Snowmobile Hill Climb in Aspen/Thayne, WY.

Ed Horn – the Voice from Virginia. Whether he is screaming his heart out to the latest chart topping rock hit, helping fans rub up against one another on the dance floor with a “pocket-polisher,” or amazing everyone with his A Capella versions of “Desperado” or “Beth” - here is one front man you will never forget.

SLG: Any comments about the local live music scene, the music industry in general? What do you think is the best way to get your music out there?

KL: Southeast Idaho is full of talented musicians. Most of the local music scene and band members are friends of ours, and we all support each other. The music industry is always changing and going through various cycles. But good rock n’ roll will always be there, exciting to listen to and make you want to dance.

When Rick, Claw and Tony started out together 20 years ago, it started with a dream to play just originals but they had to learn enough covers to be able to play the venues in Southeast Idaho. Eventually they had played their own songs enough that fans were singing along, dancing and even requesting them.

Kaught Lookin carries that on today as it is still all about being able to just do what they love to do – playing music and making the fans happy. Getting paid for doing what they love every weekend – that’s just icing!

SLG: Recordings? Will you have CD's or more for sale at the show?

KL: No recordings yet as Kaught Lookin, but they have been playing revived songs from the 2002 CD that Rick, Claw and Tony created as Exit 69. Back then, CDs were sold at shows along with other merchandise.

SLG: Is it something Kaught Lookin will do again?

KL: Time will tell. Ed now lends his awesome vocals and his own spin to those old songs, giving them new life and making them more like Kaught Lookin originals each time they are played. The Kaught Lookin boys have also been spending some of the down time writing new stuff. Keep listening....

This week in the Pocatello local live music scene, one of the most diverse sets of music genres I’ve seen – from heavy metal to Irish rock, A Cappella to Country music stars – we’ve got it all.

Tomorrow night, Thursday the 18th, Flying Monkey Booking is pleased to produce another metal show at the Elks Lodge, corner of Main and Benton Streets in Pocatello. On Friday night, continue your St. Patrick’s Day celebrations at Portneuf Valley Brewing, S. 1st Avenue in Pocatello with The Wailing O’Sheas. Music starts at 8:30 p.m., no cover and open to all ages.

Based from Salt Lake City, The Wailing O’Sheas are a tribute band to the upbeat Irish punk rock bands Flogging Molly, Dropkick Murphy, The Pogues and more. We’ll just call it “sham-rock,” and call it good.

Fronted by bassist and vocalist John Chatelain and joined by fiddle player Andy Reiner, a graduate of the Berklee College of Music, The Wailing O’Sheas play some of the most memorable and emotionally driven Irish punk rock to date. Alternatively on Friday night, see alternative rock and electro pop bands Kill Paradise, the Stereos and Missing Method at The Icon, N. Main Street in Pocatello. Show starts at 8:00 p.m., open to all ages and $10 at the door.

Kill Paradise is based from Denver, CO. Their music was recently optioned by MTV for use in an upcoming television series on the cable station. Find out more at www.myspace.com/killsparadise.

And based more locally from Salt Lake City, Missing Method is formed with front man Dan Cutler, guitarist Chris Henderson and David Dean on drums. The band uses 80's melodies with 90's moody rock to created a new spin on familiar, classic rock sounds. Comparable to a heavier Maroon 5, Depeche Mode or the Stone Temple Pilots, the band has opened for Everclear and are currently recording with Mike Greene (David Archuleta, B.B. On Saturday the 20th, see more independent rock at The Gateway Theater, S. 2nd Avenue in Pocatello with the locally-based alt. rock / punk band Last Regrets. Concert starts at 7:00 p.m., open to all ages, $4 at the door or $3 in advance by calling Brian Hermansen at (208) 252-2536. Last Regrets will be joined by Skylar Huffield at the show.

Formed some 18 months ago, Last Regrets is an all-acoustic band. Their CD, "When We All Break Down," is slated for an April 2010 release. The band has shared the stage with Rookie of the Year, Spondee, Madison Lights, Airlift, Sidelined, Seven Feet Below and many more local musicians and bands. Country rock fans and fans of all-girl bands, rejoice! Portneuf Valley Brewing is bringing Girls Night OUT to their stage on Saturday the 20th, starting at 8:30 p.m. Girls Night Out is a locally-based band performing country rock.

And there is an A Capella Extravaganza, featuring Vocal Point, scheduled at the Jensen Grand Concert Hall on the Idaho State University campus on Saturday the 20th, starting at 7:30 p.m. Tickets prices are $15 for reserved seating and $12 for general seating, available at Vicker's Western Stores in Pocatello and Idaho Falls.

The big concert of the week is the eagerly-anticipated Jason Aldean concert with Luke Bryan at Holt Arena, Sunday, March 21st, starting at 7:00 p.m. Tickets for the Wide Open 2010 Tour are $24.75 to 34.75, available at www.isu.edu/tickets, at the Holt Arena ticket office and also at Vicker’s Western Stores in Pocatello and Idaho Falls.

Jason Aldean has recorded three albums: “Jason Aldean,” “Relentless” and “Wide Open,” generating ten singles on the Billboard country singles charts. Number 1 hits include "Why," "She's Country," "Big Green Tractor" and "The Truth."

When commenting on the latest album, Aldean explained, “Wide Open is the only way I know how to live … I don’t do anything half-ass, and you never have to guess on where I stand on things. I’m pretty much an open book. I understand there may be hitches along the way, but if I’m in, I’m in no matter what.”

Spring is springing; the other day I went to work without a coat! And the Pocatello local live music scene is springing too. This week: an Elvis tribute act, CD release events for a locally based rock band, a big concert by a Nashville #1 country music artist and a debut performance by an Oregon pop rock band.

Ryan Pelton does an Elvis show that rivals the best of the best. He has performed all over the world, from at casinos, fairs, theaters, festivals, production shows and professional sports arenas. Pelton is one of the few who performs all the eras of Elvis Presley.

Recently, Pelton appeared with Celine Dion on American Idol performing a duet of “If I Can Dream,” and he played the role of Elvis in Dakota Fanning’s film, “Hound Dog.”

Ryan Pelton’s show, “American Icon,” will be live in concert at the Blackfoot Performing Arts Center tonight, March 10, starting at 7:30, with a repeat performance at the Hillcrest Performing Arts Center in Idaho Falls on Thursday the 11th. For ticket information, visit www.ryanpelton.com.

Rooted in Southeast Idaho, the alt-rock band, Somewhere in the Middle, is releasing their self-titled EP, recorded at Fudge Studio in New Orleans. The band consists of lead singer and guitarist, Aaron Ball, Jake Tolle on lead guitar, bassist Chris McElprang and Johnathan Brownly on drums and vocals.

They play original music that spans genres from sad ballads to danceable disco songs and humorous ditties. Comparable to Better Than Ezra or The Bare Naked Ladies, Inside Pocatello Magazine wrote of the band, “energetic, enthusiastic, and passionate, melodic, soulful rock music!”

Somewhere In the Middle’s EP contains four songs, “Inspiration,” “Wounds,” “Piece of Me” and “Second Gear,” the latter currently on regular rotation on Star 98.5 FM and on 99.9 The Buzz in Twin Falls, ID. The band has toured from Los Angeles to Nashville, performing over 100 shows last year, including guest spots with Shinedown, Sick Puppies, Great White and Hawthorne Heights.

Kicking off their EP release week at Budget Tapes & Records (website) tomorrow, Thursday the 11th at 5:00 p.m. and Friday the 12th at CD World in Idaho Falls (map) with acoustic sets, SIMT has scheduled their full EP release party at The Icon, N. Main St. in Pocatello (map) on Saturday the 13th starting at 9:00 p.m. They will be joined by The Ciminals, Rising Son and more, before starting a northwest tour. On Friday the 12th, Nashville country music star James Otto is in concert at the Stephens Performing Arts Center on the Idaho State University Campus. Tickets are $5 to $15, available online at www.isu.edu/tickets.

Otto is perhaps best known for the lead-off single “Just Got Started Lovin’ You” from his 2008 release, “Sunset Man.” The song hit #1 on Billboard’s country music charts. For more, visit www.jamesotto.net.

At Taps Bar on Garrett Way this weekend, you can catch Kaught Lookin’ playing rock covers from 9:00 to close. No cover, open to those 21+.

And Robert Meade, an acoustic singer / songwriter will be playing two shows on Saturday the 13th. Catch him at the Vinyl Perk on S. Main St. at 2:00 p.m., and again at the Flipside Lounge at 9:00 p.m.

The locally-based and popular roots rock and reggae group, Bender, is scheduled to play Portneuf Valley Brewing on S. 1st Avenue (map) on Friday the 12th starting at 8:30 p.m. And on Saturday the 13th, Crown Point is scheduled to take the pub’s stage, playing pop rock.

Based from Portland, Oregon and formed just three months ago, Crown Point plays memorable, meaningful, danceable music with an emphasis on harmony and lyrics. Fronted by vocalist and guitarist Jon Davidson, the four-piece also includes guitarist Russel Stafford, Rober Finn on bass and Tyler Chen on drums.

The individuals in Crown Point have shared the stage with such varied artists as Saliva, The Exies, Hurt, Russell Crowe and more. “The coolest experience I've ever had at a show,” said Davidson, “is when a fan came up to us after a concert and said that the lyrics to one of our songs had given her the courage to forgive her father and make amends with him. In the long run, those are the types of things that make shows matter, not the size or place.”
